Quantum technologies continue to unlock horizons that once seemed impossible. One such achievement is the creation of a quantum battery capable of storing energy a thousand times longer than previous models. Australian researchers from CSIRO and RMIT have proven the practical use of quantum batteries not only for rapid charging but also for effective energy storage. Unlike traditional batteries, quantum batteries use properties of quantum entanglement and superposition to instantly accumulate energy. However, until recently, their main limitation was the extremely short storage duration — energy would dissipate within nanoseconds. The new method developed by the Australian team extended the storage time to tens of microseconds — more than a thousand-fold improvement. The key innovation was the use of molecular triplet states as a so-called "dark" state — a condition in which energy can be stored significantly longer without radiative loss. This principle was tested on five mini devices, with one achieving more than 40 microseconds of energy retention. The breakthrough was published in PRX Energy under the title “Extending the Self‑Discharge Time of Dicke Quantum Batteries Using Molecular Triplets.” This work not only confirms theoretical models but also paves the way for real-world applications, such as in medical sensors, microcontrollers, or energy storage for IoT systems. The researchers emphasize this is only the beginning. Future efforts will focus on extending storage from microseconds to milliseconds and beyond, developing more stable materials, and ensuring safe energy extraction.
