On July 12–13, 2025, the next stage of the largest international military exercises 'Talisman Sabre' began, conducted every two years by Australia and the USA. These maneuvers are considered a key element of strategic cooperation among allies in the Indo-Pacific region. In 2025, more than 30,000 military personnel from 21 countries, including Japan, South Korea, the UK, Canada, Indonesia, and the Philippines, participated. For the first time, the exercises were held not only in Australia but also in Papua New Guinea, demonstrating the expansion of the sphere of influence and operational capabilities of the allied bloc. The main goal in 2025 was to refine joint operations in multi-domain warfare—land, sea, air, cyberspace, and space. The military practiced amphibious landings, air strikes, reconnaissance, and cyber defense of critical infrastructure. Key attention was paid to the rapid deployment of forces in case of conflict with a high-tech adversary. The presence of Chinese reconnaissance ships near the exercise zone drew attention. Australian authorities, including Acting Defense Minister Pat Conroy, confirmed the country’s preparedness for possible surveillance attempts and security measures taken. Australia, however, refrained from commenting on hypothetical participation in regional conflict, emphasizing that every decision will be made in coordination with allies and national interest. Papua New Guinea's participation symbolizes the growing importance of island nations in the strategic calculations of Western powers. Having recently signed security agreements with the USA and Australia, the country now hosts the exercises, providing access to airfields, ports, and training grounds. Meanwhile, the drills occur amid rising tensions in the South China Sea, strengthening China-Russia ties, and the Belt and Road Initiative. Participants clearly indicated readiness for rapid response and cooperation in case of conflict in a region of dense economic and geopolitical interests. 'Talisman Sabre' 2025 thus became not just a show of force but a significant step in forming a unified operational space for allies ready to confront 21st-century challenges in one of the world’s most tense regions.
